Season's Cheatings

The holiday season is a time for joy, giving, and unfortunately, scammers looking to cash in on your festive spirit. Scammers are getting craftier, but with a few simple steps, you can outsmart them and keep your holidays merry and bright. Here are five easy tips to help you avoid scams this season.
1. Beware of Too-Good-To-Be-True Deals
You know the saying—if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Whether it’s an ad on social media for 90% off that trendy gadget or an email promising free gift cards, take a pause. Only shop from websites you know and trust, and check for reviews before you hit “buy.”
2. Stick to Secure Payment Methods
When shopping online, use credit cards or secure payment platforms like PayPal. Avoid wiring money or paying with gift cards, as these methods are harder to trace if you’re scammed. A good rule of thumb: if a seller insists on a gift card as payment, walk away.
3. Watch for Phishy Emails and Texts
Scammers love to impersonate trusted brands, especially during the holidays. Be cautious of emails or texts claiming there’s an issue with your order or account. Instead of clicking on links, go directly to the retailer’s website or app to check.
4. Protect Your Personal Info
No legitimate company will ask for your Social Security number or bank PIN to confirm an order. Keep personal information private, especially over the phone or online.
5. Stay Vigilant on Social Media
Holiday giveaway scams are everywhere on social platforms. If you see a post offering a chance to “win big,” think twice before sharing your info or clicking a link. Check the brand’s official account for verification.
The holidays should be about spreading cheer—not falling for scams. By staying alert and sticking to these tips, you can keep your celebrations scam-free and focus on what truly matters: time with loved ones.
Happy (and safe) holidays!
